2020 : Six Resolutions to Enhance Your Safety on the Web
Technology: Starting a new year is a great opportunity to develop good habits. Here are six good resolutions that will help make you safer on the Internet.
Rely on the Cloud
It's easy to set up your smartphone so that every photo and video from your camera is saved in the cloud you call home : Google Photos, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive or iCloud (Apple).
Manage your passwords intelligently
So, how do you generate a strong and unique password for each account, and how do you keep track of it? Use a password manager. For example, like me, you can store a strongly encrypted password file in the Cloud using 1Password.
Use multi-factor authentication
In fact, if an important service does not offer 2FA as a security option, you might want to ask them why. Both Google and Microsoft offer simple and elegant authentication applications for smartphones. If you're the independent type, try the free Authy app.
Stop tweaking things
To get a faster computer, what you need is to add memory, or replace an old rotating disk with a powerful SSD.
Make the updates
If you prefer to take a conservative approach, it's fairly easy to postpone updates for up to a month while others identify problems. But spending energy trying to bypass the built-in update code is time you'll never get back.
Uninstall your antivirus
About ten or twenty years ago, installing third-party antivirus software on a Windows PC was probably necessary. But today... not really. Windows Defender, present in every Windows 10 installation, is more than enough.
By the way, these third-party antivirus programs are also likely to interfere with an update or accidentally quarantine a critical system file. Save time and money by doing without them.
