Orion : the smart glasses that push back the limits of augmented reality
Five years ago, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced to the world his plans to build AR (augmented reality) glasses. At Meta Connect 2024, Meta unveiled its latest technological advances. The Meta Quest 3 headset was presented as a more accessible solution for discovering virtual reality. However, the real star of the conference was Orion, a prototype of augmented reality glasses that could revolutionise the way we interact with the digital world.
Advanced features for a unique user experience
Orion's glasses offer an unprecedented augmented reality experience thanks to an extended field of vision, high resolution and precise tracking of head and eye movements. Through them, users can see virtual objects superimposed realistically on their real environment.
Orion's diverse applications
The glasses can be used in the following areas :
o Professional : assistance with design, training, maintenance, etc.
o Entertainment : Immersive video games, virtual social experiences, etc.
o Communication : Augmented reality video calls, holograms, etc.
To develop products of this type, we need to overcome a number of technical challenges, including miniaturising components and developing appropriate software. It will probably be several years before the glasses are available to the general public.
Meta has announced new partnerships with developers, content creators and companies to enrich its ecosystem.
