Huawei and ITU have launched a scholarship for young people with technology projects focused on community development. This initiative comes against the backdrop of digital transformation, which has become an engine of growth in many economic sectors, with the main aim of contributing to the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the Sustainable Development Forum 2023, held on November 21 in Dongguan, China, under the theme "Prospering together with technology: achieving sustainable development", Huawei announced the creation of a scholarship in partnership with the ITU. The scholarship, named the "ITU Generation Connect Young Leadership Program in partnership with Huawei", will open for applications next year and run for three years.

Selected young people aged 18 to 28 will receive financial support, mentoring by ITU and Huawei experts, and opportunities to participate in joint events to bring their high-impact community development projects to fruition.

This initiative reinforces the Chinese company's confidence in the potential of young digital talent to be key players in future technological innovation. It also represents a new stage in the collaboration established last year between Huawei and the ITU through the Partner2Connect Digital Coalition (P2C), a program aimed at promoting connectivity and digital transformation in regions of the world lacking digital access. By joining this program, Huawei has committed to connecting around 120 million people living in these regions by 2025, with already 90 million people benefiting from this connectivity.

By encouraging young people to push the boundaries of the global digital ecosystem and make innovative contributions, this grant reflects the importance of digital as a key lever for accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to Dr Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau.
