Study on the use of Internet, social networks and mobile in the 1st quarter of 2020

 

4.57 billion Internet users, 3.81 billion social network users, 5.16 billion mobile users... Hootsuite and We Are Social have updated their major annual study on the use of the web, social networks and mobile during the first quarter of 2020.

The Covid-19 pandemic has shaken digital behaviors in recent months around the world. The billions of Internet users, who found themselves confined to trying to fight the virus, have turned to social media and the Internet to stay in touch with their loved ones, stay informed or help them work from home.

 

Among the main lessons learned from their report, We Are Social and Hootsuite note a strong increase in digital activity in confined countries, as well as a significant increase in the use of social media and instant messaging.

Internet in April 2020: key figures

Among the many data revealed by this study, we have compiled the main figures on Internet use in April 2020. Out of 7.77 billion people in the world, there are now :

  • 5.16 billion unique phone users (66%),
  • 4.57 billion Internet users (59%),
  • 3.81 billion users of social networks (49%),
  • 3.76 billion mobile social media users (99%),
  • 6h39 spent on average per day on the Internet.
