Skype takes on Zoom - no more needing an account to make calls
Skype declares war on rival Zoom. Microsoft's video conferencing application now allows you to make calls with multiple participants without having to create an account or install software on your computer.
On April 3, 2020, Microsoft finally decided to promote Skype Meet Now, a feature that has been available for several months but remained unknown to users until now. The tool allows you to create a video meeting in just a few clicks and invite a handful of participants without having to create a Skype account or install the program on your PC. The feature is accessible via Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers.
How does Skype Meet Now work?
Available here, Skype Meet Now actually allows people to generate a single link to invite friends or colleagues to a group video call. Anyone can join the meeting, "even if they're not on Skype," says Microsoft. "The link to your meeting doesn't expire and can be used at any time," the company says. Skype Meet Now also allows you to record your meeting, so you can come back to it later to retrieve forgotten information. "We keep your recording for 30 days," Microsoft warns. All of the service's options are free of charge.
By highlighting this little-known feature, Microsoft is trying to appeal to home-based workers in particular. So far, the Zoom application has emerged as the most popular video call service for coronavirus containment. Developed by an American start-up, the service now has 200 million users worldwide. Zoom stands out in particular for its great ease of use. It is thus possible to create a video meeting with more than 100 participants in just a few clicks.
Unfortunately, Zoom recently fell victim to a serious security breach. The breach allowed thousands of private videos recorded on Zoom to be shared on the web. As a result, 15,000 private Zoom conversations have been posted by hackers. With its "new" service, will Skype get Zoom users worried about their privacy back? Are you still using Zoom? We're waiting for your feedback in the comments.
