This strange Sony accessory adds two buttons and a screen to the PS4 controller.
Sony unveils an amazing accessory for the PS4 DualShock 4 controller. This is a mount to be placed on the back of the paddle, which is equipped with two buttons and an OLED display.
Is this Sony's answer to Microsoft's Elite Series 2 controller? Probably, although this new Dual Shock 4 Back Button Attachment is an accessory for the PS4 controller, not a new Dual Shock.
Two extra buttons and an invisible screen in play
On this strange support there are two keys that reinforce the existing arsenal of commands. As with most controllers that are a little more complex than the basic models, these buttons are only assigned one of the front or side functions (Square, R1, L2, etc.). No key sequence recording is possible.
These additional buttons make it easier to perform precise actions while keeping your thumbs on the joysticks. You can configure the lower left button to switch from one weapon to another in a shooting game with a simple press of the middle or ring finger.
By touching a specific spot on the slab, you will be able to switch between the three profiles pre-recorded in the device's internal memory. With a simple caress on the bottom of the surface, you can edit the profiles to customize both the device and joystick key assignments. Finally, the joystick's jack plug is simply offset on the front of the accessory, still facing the players so they can connect their favourite headphones.
Will this accessory be compatible with the future PlayStation 5 controller that is scheduled for release at the end of next year? Nothing is certain, but we can assume so. According to the first visuals and patents gleaned from the web, it seems that Sony hasn't upset the lines of its DualShock: it has simply softened them for the most part.
