Ugandan businessman Ashish Thakkar inaugurated Mara Phones, his first smartphone production plant, on 7 October 2019 in the presence of Rwandan President Paul Kagame. A factory located in Kigali.

For a start, Mara Phones will produce two smartphone models: Mara X and Mara Z. Smartphones presented as adapted to African realities, including a long-lasting battery, large storage space and a 2-year update of the Android version. With this plant, Mara Phones intends to conquer the very promising African market, but also to challenge the major companies abroad.
