The city of Douala has taken a decisive step towards regulating the motorbike taxi sector. Since 11 July, a digital platform has enabled motorbike taxi drivers to identify themselves online and be monitored by the town hall.

A tool to improve safety and professionalism

This innovative platform, developed by the Douala Urban Community in partnership with Moto Afrique, offers several advantages:

Driver identification and traceability : each motorbike taxi driver is allocated a unique QR code, which is affixed to the back of his or her chasuble. Passengers can scan this QR code to identify the driver and assess the quality of his or her driving.

Combating insecurity : The platform will enable passengers to report any inappropriate behaviour or incidents. This will help to reduce the number of ill-intentioned individuals who use motorbikes to physically attack people.

Improved image of the sector : Registered motorbike taxis will enjoy a better image with the public and the authorities. Until now, this image has been tarnished because many drivers do not respect the highway code, thereby ignoring the safety of their customers and/or passers-by.

An easier registration process

It is compulsory for all motorbike taxi drivers in Douala to register. Drivers have until 15 September 2024 to register on the platform. To support them in this process, registration points have been opened in the city's five districts, and the sector's unions have been mobilised.

An ambitious project to serve the city

Launched in 2021, this project to professionalise motorbike taxis is part of a drive to modernise the city of Douala and improve the quality of life of its residents. This large-scale project, financed by the State and development partners, aims to train drivers and develop parking areas, among other things.
