What is online data backup?
Data backup is a computer operation that consists of duplicating and securing the data contained in a computer system. When speaking of data, we are talking about electronic mail, databases and any other information resource.
This operation should be distinguished from two related concepts:
- the data recording, consisting of writing the data on a device (external hard disk, USB key) where the information will remain even if the machine were to suddenly shut down,
- archiving, which consists of recording the data in such a way as to guarantee its long-term conformity to a given state; in other words, the user can find his data at any time in the state in which he has kept it.
Backup necessarily involves recording data, but not necessarily for archiving purposes. Online data backup fulfills an archiving purpose.
It consists in copying or storing data in a storage space so that it can be restored if necessary. One of the advantages of this backup solution is that it's done in a synchronized and automatical way which allows updating files of any size within 24 hours.
In addition, users have the ability to restore their data and manipulate it as they wish no matter where they are located. This is in contrast to physical media, which are difficult to access at all times, and on which it's difficult to recover stored data in case of disaster such as fire, flood or theft.
This method has shown its worth in a context of permanent insecurity. As cybersecurity attacks are becoming more and more numerous, organizations have realized the importance of saving sensitive data online on secure servers.
