Timber: The FMU - Reforest Project is making great strides

To plant "240,000 trees in four years in order to enrich felling gaps, parks and plots in degraded environments in the Forest Management Units in Cameroon" is the objective of the FMU - Reforest project.

Achieving this objective requires having a large quantity of plants and particularly of good quality. Hence, the nurseries of the companies taking part in the project have been extended in order to guarantee better living conditions for the plants. These are mainly the companies PALLISCO, GRUMCAM-ALPICAM, SEFAC, and SEEF.

How were these seed nurseries set up ?

Seed nurseries are a kind of environment where plants are grown to promote their development before their implantation on the final plantation site.

In preparation for future use, the size of the nurseries had to be measured according to the annual planting targets per company, the average germination rate of the seeds and the growth time needed to reach the optimal transplant height (40-80 cm).

As a reminder, the EU-funded project "Reforestation in Cameroon's FMUs" (UFA-Reforest) started in early 2022 and will end in 2026. The tree planting strategy is part of an overall project for sustainable forest management that includes reforestation, traceability and certification of forestry companies.
