The internet penetration rate in Cameroon reaches 30% in 2020, thanks to the arrival of 570,000 new internet users.
In January 2020, Cameroon had 7.8 million people connected to the internet, according to a report published by Hootsuite and We Are Social, two organisations with platforms for monitoring flows on social networks and the internet. With this number of internet users, it is reported, the internet penetration rate in Cameroon reached 30% in January 2020.
Year-on-year, according to the same source, there has been an increase of 7.8%, thanks to the arrival on the web of 570 000 new Cameroonian Internet users over a period of twelve months.
This increase in the number of Cameroonian Internet users is due to the high penetration of mobile phones among the population. According to the above-mentioned study, this population is connecting more via mobile phones, thanks to the democratization of smartphones.
Indeed, according to the report released by Hootsuite and We Are Social, more than 59% of Cameroonian Internet users connect to the web via smartphones. At the same time, only 39.4% have access to the Internet via computers and 1.3% via tablets.
As a reminder, in 2016, according to Internet Live Stats, Cameroon (+16.5), along with Mali (+18.6%) and Lesotho (+18.1%), was already among the three African countries with the highest increase in Internet penetration rate in a single year.
