PS5: Sony says it will be backwards compatible with over 4000 PS4 games

The PS5 will eventually be backwards compatible with the PS4's more than 4,000 games, says Sony in a release. The PlayStation's chief system architect Mark Cerny said mid-week that around 100 PS4 games would be available at launch.

Sony and Microsoft were each holding a streaming event around their next console in mid-week. Sony kicked off the event with a highly technical presentation by PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny. In the course of this monolithic inventory, the engineer revealed some information that may be of interest to the general public. In particular, he said a little more about the backwards compatibility of the console.

The entire PS4 catalogue available, frequency boosted

"With all these great games in the PS4 catalogue, we've put significant effort into making sure our fans can play their favourite games on PS5," says Sony, adding, "We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4000+ PS4 titles will be compatible with PS5. But Sony doesn't stop there.

In the rest of its press release, Sony explains that backwards compatible titles will run at a boosted PS5 frame rate so that they can benefit from a higher or more stable frame rate and potentially higher definition. For this to be possible, however, the manufacturer must test each title.

"We're currently evaluating games individually to identify any issues that require adjustment from the original development efforts," the release concludes by going back over Cerny's presentation, almost apologizing for only mentioning a hundred games: "In his presentation, Cerny provided an overview by mentioning the top 100 most played PS4 games, which shows how much we're working towards backwards compatibility in the right direction.
