H.E. Paul BIYA calls for a responsible use of social networks

In his address to the nation on 31 December 2019, President Paul Biya returned to this subject in a few words. "It is neither social networks nor individual media outlets that can change the results of an election, still less illegal demonstrations, violence and personal or hateful attacks," he said. Remember what I said at the time: "Let's debate, let's not fight. ".

Already on 10 September 2019, the Cameroonian president, in a special address to the nation, took offence at the fact that "the new information and communication technologies (NICTs) and especially social networks have unfortunately favoured the emergence of self-proclaimed leaders, extremists of all stripes trying to establish their notoriety by means of insults, threats, calls to hatred, violence and murder".

In general, the Cameroonian president once again advocates the responsible use of social networks. In his previous speeches, particularly those addressed to young people, he has regularly stressed the opportunities that young people can exploit from the digital breakthrough. At the same time, he has also regularly called on them to be vigilant, not to be "passive Internet users" and not to be carried away by "birds of ill omen".

To Cameroonians in the diaspora, "whether they are or are no longer Cameroonians, I think they should, out of patriotism, refrain from negative comments about their country of origin. One must always respect one's homeland, its institutions and those who embody them," the Cameroonian president advised on 31 December 2019.
