Cameroon: Minette Libom Li Likeng offers an inclusive multimedia centre for young blind people in Yaoundé

Young blind people in Yaoundé can now also benefit greatly from the facilities offered by the digital world despite the limitations due to their disability. This is thanks to the Cameroonian government's endowment of an Inclusive Multimedia Centre at the Circle of Rehabilitated Young Blind People, located in the Ekie district of Yaounde.

The official inauguration ceremony of the centre chaired by Mrs. Minette Libom Li Likeng took place on Monday, December 2, 2020, in the presence of several prominent personalities including the Mayor of Yaounde IV and the Minister of Social Affairs.

CJARC's inclusive multimedia centre is equipped with state-of-the-art apparatus and equipment meeting international standards. The various services it offers are among others: computer training, web browsing (céciweb), Braille editing and transcription, sound library (sound library), not only allow for full integration into the digital world, but also promote the professional integration of disabled people in general, and blind people in particular.

CJARC's inclusive multimedia centre is also equipped with a website. In addition, in order to ensure optimal functioning, the staff in charge of the management of the Centre have received adequate training to enable them to carry out their tasks efficiently.

The setting up of this inclusive centre takes place in a context where digital inclusion, through the linking of all social components in the design, use, appropriation and mastery of these strategic tools is an imperative necessity, at a time when ICTs are taking an increasing place in the development of countries.

"The Government's allocation of an Inclusive Multimedia Centre to CJARC is very important in this respect. It represents an important axis of the battle that the public authorities are waging against the digital divide in Cameroon, and complements the geographical axis (city/countryside), as well as the gender axis (man/woman) already established within the public opinion. This endowment especially reinforces the idea that the human being is at the centre of the efforts and actions deployed by the highest Cameroonian authorities to bridge the digital divide," said Minette Libom Li Likeng, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, during her speech at the ceremony.

"The ceremony that brings us together is therefore the materialisation of the integration of people with disabilities in public policies for digital inclusion, and as such should serve as an important benchmark for the Government's commitment to this project", she added.

The ceremony was also the occasion for the presentation of certificates to the trainers, after which the audience was invited to take a guided tour of the site and the newly acquired equipment.
