Android: new emojis may arrive separately from system updates
You may soon no longer need to wait for a full Android update to be deployed to enjoy new emojis. Google is planning to deploy them separately from its mobile operating system updates.
The use of emojis to punctuate an online discussion has now become almost indispensable for expressing feelings and setting the tone of a written conversation. Although new emojis are created every year, their deployment comes up against a major drawback: they are only available through system updates.
To avoid having to wait any longer, Google is currently looking for a solution to be able to offer the new emojis outside of Android updates. At least that's what the members of XDA Developers have discovered. They point out that the Mountain View firm has made several changes within the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Until now, fonts and emojis were stored in a read-only system partition, forcing a system update to be made.
But in the latest version of AOSP, Google seems to allow a new process, "system_server", to read and write to the same partition. This would mean that Google would be able to deploy the new emojis on the server side without the user having to wait for an Android update. Now we just have to wait a few more months to see whether or not Google applies these changes in the next version of Android.
