What is an SSL certificate ?

An SSL certificate is an "electronic certificate that authenticates the identity of a Website and enables an encrypted connection". SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) refers to a security protocol that creates an encrypted link between a web server and a web browser. 

This protocol secures Internet connections and prevents criminals from viewing or altering information exchanged between two systems. In other words, it keeps information confidential and secures online transactions.

It is a sign of trust, which is why companies should add SSL certificates to their websites: the certificate brings more credit to the website and therefore to its content (media, shared links).

Does the security certificate condition the existence of a website ?

A website functions well without an electronic certificate, but the difference is that the Internet user who visits it is exposed to malicious attacks. It should be noted that the certificate has a limited lifespan, and when it expires, the site becomes vulnerable again.

In this respect, browsers, in particular Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, display security warnings on pages to inform Internet users that the connection to the pages concerned is not secure.
