LG may exit the smartphone market in the face of a slump in sales

LG is considering withdrawing from the smartphone market. Faced with the collapse of its worldwide sales, the South Korean firm could choose to close part, if not all, of its mobile division.

In the space of 5 years, LG's smartphone division has lost up to 3.743 billion euros. In 2015, however, LG still held 15.4% of the smartphone market. By the end of 2020, the brand's worldwide market share was only 3%. In France, LG has not been present on the cell phone market since the beginning of 2019, i.e. almost two years. At the time, the French branch explained that it wanted to "take a break" in order to "come back stronger" during the deployment of 5G.

Aware of its shortcomings, LG wonders about the future of its mobile division. "At present, all possibilities are open and the direction of the company's operations is being carefully reviewed," warns Bong-Seok Kwon in its internal memo. When questioned by our colleagues at the Android Authority, a spokesman for LG confirmed the veracity of the memo and stated that "nothing has yet been decided on the future of our mobile business, but the management is keeping an open mind".

In any case, this is not the first time LG has hesitated to withdraw from the cell phone market. Already in 2012, LG admitted that it was considering leaving the telephony sector to focus on TV sets. We'll tell you more as soon as possible. While waiting for more information on LG's defection, feel free to give your opinion in the comments below.
