Customs duties on telephones: Who is Arintech?
Paul Zambo is the President and CEO of Arintech, the State's agent in the development of the new system for collecting customs duties on mobile phones and tablets. According to him, the platform "gathers (should gather, he should say, Editor's note) all the data of all telephone operators in Cameroon" and uses a "very efficient triangulation system" to solve problems such as multiple SIM phones or duplication of IMEIs. A guest on the programme "Scène de presse" on government television CRTV on October 11, 2020, the latter nevertheless admitted that this technology is not 100% safe.
Moreover, he had difficulty in clearly stating what type of data will be useful to make his application work. On the security and confidentiality of personal data, the promoter of Arintech gave as its only guarantee "compliance with the specifications" set by the State, thus reinforcing all the reservations that some operators have about its platform and its company, whose service records are not visible anywhere.
"In fact, Arintech resembles a nebula led by a certain Paul Zambo, better known as the national president of the political party called Movement for the Integral Development of the Republic (MDIR), once engaged in the activity of aircraft rental," he says in the corridors of a multinational telecom company. The CEO of Arintech, for his part, presents himself as an "inventor". According to him, his project was selected in competitions organised by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, such as during the "Digital Innovation Week", and incubated in the same environment.
