Cameroon is setting up a monitoring system to prevent disruptions in market supply.

Alasane Ba, the representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Cameroon, handed over equipment of the Cameroon Market Information System (Camcis) to the Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, on 29 September in Yaounde, in order to prevent disruptions in market supply in the Far North region.

UNDP provided tablets, laptops, powerbanks, modems and scales to strengthen the capacity of local institutions to manage shocks affecting the supply and demand of consumer goods. In the departments of Diamaré, Logone and Chari, Mayo-Sava, and Mayo-Tsanaga.

"Thanks to the market information system, the areas concerned will now have a market intelligence tool that will enable public authorities and populations to prevent the structural mismatch between supply and demand that is at the root of food insecurity," explained Alasane Ba.

According to Mirabeau Foko Kamdem, an official at the Ministry of Commerce, the agents in charge of collecting information will now criss-cross the markets and collect prices and inform them about the information system. Subsequently, there will be the production of newsletters on market behavior and certain commercial products deemed critical.
