To improve access to public services, many countries around the world are using digital technology to modernise their administrative systems. Cameroon has embarked on an ambitious reform of its civil status system.

Towards an inclusive digital civil registry

A new draft law on civil status in Cameroon has been debated in the National Assembly. The aim is to create a more inclusive and secure system that will reduce the risk of false documents. From now on, civil status records (birth, marriage, death) will be systematically digitised. 

Other innovations include the introduction of a unique personal identification number assigned at birth, and the extension of the deadline for declaring births. This deadline, initially set at 3 months, has now been extended to 12 months. 

A crucial issue for the country's development

The digitisation of civil status is a major challenge for the socio-economic development of Cameroon. By improving the management of personal data and identity, this reform will help to strengthen citizens' confidence in institutions and promote social inclusion.

However, access to digital tools and internet connection in rural areas are factors in the success or failure of this project.
