Social media: Kenya issues its right to review Meta's content moderation
Kenya's top court has issued an order banning Facebook's parent company, Meta, from using third-party content moderators to review content on its platform. As previously reported, the court had ordered Meta's former content moderator, Sama, to be the sole content reviewer until the case is heard.
However, it also prevented Meta from firing more than 200 moderators at its hub in Kenya and from hiring any other company, including Sama's replacement, Majorel. The interim court orders prevented Sama from conducting reviews, leading the company to put all its content moderators on paid leave from 1 April. Meanwhile, Majorel, which had been hired by Meta, said the orders put at risk the 200 moderators it had hired after establishing a hub in Kenya in late 2022, as well as its ability to operate.
While it is not clear who is helping the tech giant remove content that promotes and spreads hate, misinformation and violence, Meta has employed other service providers - "global partners" - while Majorel and Sama await the outcome of the petition.
